snowpocalypse

I survived the 2nd snowpocalyse (24inchs), now but got another big
storm (10-20 inchs) coming tomorrow. classes tomolo are cancelled (yes
2nd day in a row) and the Fed gov is shut down.

the snow-covered streets devoid of ppl and cars over the weekend
reminded many DC folks of zombie movies or Day After Tomorrow ...

if this snow carries on, I will head over to the Library of Congress
(best place to survive according to Day After Tomorrow)...

generally ppl are enjoying the unexpected snow holidays with
twitter-convened snowball fights and snow boarding on streets. dogs
and kids are really enjoying the snow!

http://dcist.com/2010/02/snow_orleans_new_snowrleans_snola.php

I saw more snow in DC than my 5 yrs in Beijing (sheesh!). monitoring
of weather reports here are only slightly less intense than watching
incoming typhoons in Taipei (but here got dedicated Weather
Channel...)

luckily I went out today to walk around and buy more supplies. saw
ppl rush to supermarket to buy snow shovels and salt (earlier the run
was for junk food and beer!)

ppl are crying on twitter about how they just finish shovelling their
driveway and sidewalk (back breaking work!) and now got another storm
coming...others are suggesting to issue serial numbers to the
unofficial name of the storm: snowpocalyse or snowgeddon (tomorrow
will be #3)...

SMRT Space taxi

http://www.smrt.com.sg/Upload/20089221523767896.pdf

after dinner with Peck Wai and Adrian, we hailed a SMRT Hyundai Starex Space taxi. it's a 6-seater MPV that can take wheel chair as well. We were told by friendly driver that this is the one and only in S'pore at the moment, but eventually will have 50 such taxis. he took 10 weeks CPR and first aid courses. by end of yr, will have oxygen tanks on board. the taxi comes with an autoloader for wheelchair, better than London cabs. meant to support medical tourism with many such cabs stationed at airport. but he told us that he take corporate bookings and ferry special school kids. He told us that SMRT had donated services hospitals and welfare org to provide transport for the less well-off disabled and patients.

incredible Afghan cricket team

just saw an inspiring feature on Afghan cricket on BBC. against the odds stacked against them, the Afghan team had beat Scotland and Ireland (one day cricket) and even has a chance to qualify for the World Cup.

their story is like "Cool runnings" about the Jamaican Winter Olympics bobsled team

which begs the question about state of Singapore cricket (got meh?)

hot pot dinner and fireworks

Yee Wee and Sherry invited us to their place for a sumptious steamboat
dinner on the second day of CNY

after dinner we brought down the ammo store and joined the rest of
Beijing to light up the night sky. needless to say the RMB168 (about
S$30) fireworks was worth it!

Ethan and Sherry lighting off the sparklers

Yee Wee setting off a chain of 500 firecrackers. this was puny
compared to the 1,000 rounds monster he set off the other year!
